Shooting the 1993 "Campus Men" calendar in Key West was a once in a lifetime experience that everyone involved will long remember. Sorry, any incriminating evidence on film was destroyed.
Our models are a mixed breed, a variety that offers something for everyone. Its both exciting and very distracting to be in paradise for a week and a half with such hunky men. Here's a little info on this year's Campus Men calendar men:
We knew we were causing problems when as soon as we arrived in town, we were stopping traffic and almost caused an accident while heading to Duval Street on our bikes.
We took the models to a store called "Swept Away for Men" to get fitted for their swimsuits. If we had captured this on film, we could have sold more than a Chippendale's video. Seeing all these young men come in and out of the changing booths in different skimpy swimsuits gave new meaning to Madonna's song, "Dress You Up." The staff was standing around saying "...Let's see this one on you, Brian. ...Jack, that's not you. ...Tom, try this one instead. ...What about this thong, Mike. ...This one makes your pecs stick out Rob. ...Next. ...This one will do quite well: NOT!" It was a fashion designer's dream!
We heard a rumor that the Key West airport was diverting traffic from above Fort Zachary Taylor Beach whenever the Campus Men were out there getting sun, so that anyone flying planes overhead wouldn't be distracted. Still, the pools back at our vacation homes supplied by Key West Realty were where any nude tanning went on. There's just never enough towels...
The boys must learn to use more sun screen. As a result of the intense Key West summer sun, there is now some scar tissue on models' shoulders that wasn't there when we arrived. The guys at Key West Aloe did their part by supplying us with ample sun products that really worked well. We returned the favor with a photo shoot with their "Ms. Key West Aloe," which the guys enjoyed. But, please don't ask Scott about his burnt lips. Let's just say blondes don't always have more fun!
I doubt that anyone else on the island got much of a workout in while we were in town. Every day at 2 p.m. a ton of bikes would be outside of Duval Square Health & Fitness as the Campus Men worked up a sweat inside. It was wall-to-wall muscle.
There's three things you must have when shooting calendar photographs: baby oil to keep the model's skin shining just right, a water spray bottle to keep those sweat beads coming, and "Moisture Mist" to fight against the heat and humidity. While shooting, we found out there's no place to change clothes at the far end of Smather's Beach. We thought we were in trouble when a Key West Police car drove by while one of our models was running around with no clothes on. I guess sometimes you have to say "What the hell."
