Wapak grad mixes brains, brawn as OSU's Mr. August pinup guy

Jacob Sitzman may not be Wapakoneta's most famous son, but as Mr. August in the 2001 edition of the Campus Men calendar, the Wapakoneta High School graduate will achieve a certain notoriety at least.

The calendar shines a sexy spotlight on students from Ohio State University, where Sitzman is a senior majoring in civil engineering.

Appearing in the nationally distributed calendar is considered an honor among OSU students, according to Sean Ashbrook, the photographer. The photographs have athletic and collegiate themes, including shots of basketball, baseball and football players along with students in dorm rooms and other campus locales.

Sitzman is depicted as a baseball player. He is shirtless, and his uniform pants are unbuttoned.

"We worked with Jacob to plan his photo shoot," Ashbrook said. "And everyone who sees his photo loves it."

The shoot took place at a high school campus in Columbus over the summer, and Ashbrook said it was fun for everyone who was there.

"There were people everywhere, jogging on the track, coming and going," he said. "They all stopped to see what we were doing, and they really got into it."

Ashbrook, who published the first Campus Men calendar while he was a sophomore living in an OSU dorm in 1990, said he only features OSU undergraduates.

Interest in being a Campus Man is intense, he said.

"We invite students to audition that we feel will present an 'Al-American' image and a pleasant personality. We look for social individuals with lots of friends," Ashbrook said. Sitzman was one of 71 students invited to apply for the 2001 edition. He was discovered while standing in line at a grocery store, according to a press release from Ashbrook.

"I was getting groceries," Sitzman said. "Being a calendar model was not even on my mind. In fact, the idea felt awkward at first until I thought about all the women who would see my photo and I asked myself, 'Why wouldn't I do this?'"

"Many of the students who interest us would not consider posing for professional photos without being asked," Ashbrook said. "A pleasant personality is just as important as looks to us, since students who appear in the calendar participate in publicity events and media interviews. These students become very popular with campus girls and women around the country after appearing in Campus Men.

Sitzman is the son of John and Kathryn Sitzman of Wapakoneta. He graduated from Wapakoneta High School in 195. He is on the dean's list at OSU.

His mother said she isn't sure what to think about her son being Mr. August.

"He did this on his own, and I am really waiting to see the calendar before I voice my opinion," she said. "I talked to Jacob this morning, and he said the calendar came out yesterday. I guess I'll know what I think pretty soon."

Appearing in campus Men has opened doors to professional modeling and acting opportunities for some students, but most appear in the calendar just for fun.

Sitzman said his appearance is definitely the for-fun kind. He said he has taken a certain amount of ribbing from his friends over this, but he doesn't care.

"I don't want to be a model or an actor," Sitzman said, "I am going to graduate in March and join the navy."

Sitzman said he plans to attend Officer candidate School, and he has hopes of becoming a Navy Seal.

Sitzman said he has been working out seriously for the past two or three years, and he runs, bikes, swims and participates in intramural sports. "I am not a varsity athlete," he said. "I just try to stay in shape, eat right and be healthy. It's kind of funny, they made me out to be a baseball player in the calendar, and I haven't swung a bat in probably four years."

The Campus Men Internet Web site, www.campusmen.com, will allow fans who purchase the calendar to see more photos of Sitzman and the other models, to read interviews and to learn more about their lives.

Sitzman's 15 minutes of campus-wide fame has turned into a money-maker. Since being selected, he has been collecting orders for calendars from family members, friends and just about anyone who is willing to part with the calendar's asking price of $12.95.

Copies can be obtained from Sitzman or ordered art the Web site.

"Everyone I know says they want a calendar," Sitzman said.

After working with thousands of new models and college students, we know the concerns, issues and questions many new models have before their first photo shoot. It is normal for even the most macho guy to be nervous prior to his first shoot. We compiled all this training info into “ShootPrep” – our dedicated site for training models with whom we work.
