He's no shy guy anymore

SHS graduate poses as Mr. December for OSU Campus Men calendar

ED CARPENTER WAS SHY AS A CHILD. He's not only outgrown his reluctance for public attention, but stepped into the limelight as "Mr. December" in the 1991 Campus Men® of the Scarlet & Gray Calendar.

Carpenter, the son of Rich and Cindy Wazbinski of Strongsville, is a 19-year-old sophomore at Ohio State University. He graduated from Strongsville High School in 1989 and was selected as one of 16 men to be photographed in the calendar.

Over 500 students tried out for the honor of representing the university on the calendar, published by College ImageCorp of Columbus.

"I saw the women's calendar when we were at Ohio State last year," said Carpenter's mother. "I thought it was really nice. Then when someone asked him to try out for the men's calendar, he was really excited and we thought it was great.

"I saw the proofs," Wazbinski said, "and I thought there were a lot of really nice photos. In fact, there were a lot I liked better than the one they picked."

Mom wasn't too shocked that her son was chosen to be depicted in briefs lying on an exotic shoreline. He had warned her in advance he would be shown "in his underwear," she said. While she would have preferred a photo showing more of his face, his was a pretty modest shot, compared with a few others. None are extremely risque, however. All models are clothed- some more, some less.

"You'd have to know Ed," she said with a laugh. ' He's very quiet unless he knows you and it was fun to have him so excited. You have to remember, this is someone who, when he was little, would hide behind the drapes when we had company, he was so shy."

Sean Ashbrook, 23, the student publisher of the calendar, said "This is our most successful calendar yet. We've sold more during our first week than we usually do in our first month."

Ashbrook, an Akron native, has taken time from his studies for the last three years to produce the calendars. He started his business after the former producers of the calendar graduated. He prints 10,000 of each version this year and says he makes enough money from the calendars to finance his education. He is a marketing major. .

The calendars settings range from lush, exotic settings to the ordinary

a house under construction. Most were shot in Florida.

'There are some provocative shots," Ashbrook said, 'but there are some all-American shots too."

The women's calendar comes with a bonus pullout poster. It has a marching band theme, complete with sousaphone.

The calendars have not gone unnoticed by the media. A recent Akron Beacon Journal Lifestyle page was headline "Buckeyes Bare a Bit."

Carpenter is a business major studying in the honors business college at OSU. He, like the other participants, paid $340 to help offset the costs of production, lodging and transportation to Florida.

In return, each student-model received a number of free copies of the calendars, which they can sell to recoup their investment.

Some of the students said they posed to build portfolios for potential modeling careers; others did it as a lark.

"In 10 to 15 years, I'll look back and be glad I did it," said Kristin Herold, a junior from Worthington.

Wadsworth resident Tom Gairing, a senior, said his friends have him the idea to pose and he found it "exceptionally fun." He said he believed the experience could set apart from other aspiring job seekers.

"If they ask me if I've done something unique, I'll tell them said. It's something that makes me more memorable. This was Gairing's first attempt at modeling.

Copies of the $7.95 calendar can be ordered at area Waldenbooks stores or directly from the Wazbinskis by calling 238-9691.

Ed's grandmother not only approved, she bought five calendars to give her golden-age girlfriends as gifts.

ShootPrep

After working with thousands of new models and college students, we know the concerns, issues and questions many new models have before their first photo shoot. It is normal for even the most macho guy to be nervous prior to his first shoot. We compiled all this training info into “ShootPrep” – our dedicated site for training models with whom we work.

Our photographer uses ShootPrep.com to train new models before their photo sessions.
