Ohio student nearly naked on campus

COLUMBUS -- Travis Sperk thought someone was playing a joke on him when he received an e-mail asking him to pose for a 2003 calendar.

But after an e-mail back and a few practice photos, the 19-year-old former Shelby resident is "Mr. December" in The Ohio State University's "Campus Men" calendar.

A sophomore at OSU in Columbus, Sperk is the holiday poster boy in the calendar which spotlights Buckeye students. He posed in front of a volleyball net, nude except for a strategically placed volleyball. The picture's accessible at www.campusmen.com, where the calendars sell for $14.95.

When he first entered college, the mathematics major said he heard about the calendar from other classmates. His roommates wanted him to try out after seeing him without his shirt on, so when he got the e-mail he thought it was a joke.

"I said 'no, I'd never make it,'" he laughed. "I thought it was a joke, one of my roommates must have sent it to me."

But the e-mail came from the calendar's photographer, Sean Ashbrook of Columbus.

" I guess they were doing a bunch of photos, looking through the freshman yearbook," said Sperk, the son of Jeff and Linda Sperk of Shelby. "They looked through them and e-mailed a bunch of people."

Not only does he look for a pretty face, Ashbrook said he wants someone with a pleasant personality who will participate in publicity events and media interviews.

Typically, students who will listen for a few minutes when first approached are the type sought for campuswide fame.
" These students become very popular with campus girls and women around the country after appearing in 'Campus Men,'" he said.
Sperk said when he first posed, he had a choice of doing a fraternity theme or sports. The former wrestler, cross country runner and track team member from Shelby Senior High School went with a sports theme, especially since he was playing intramural volleyball at the time.
When Sperk first thought about doing the photo shoot, he checked with his family in Shelby. His mother didn't want him to do it at first, but then gave him the OK, he said.

" I use it more as a stepping stone," Sperk said, adding he would like to model for Abercrombie & Fitch at some point.

Although he doesn't want to model full-time, he would like to make some extra money for school.

Besides volleyball, Sperk fills his time with school work and volunteering at the OSU medical center in Columbus, wheeling patients to surgery. Being in the calendar has been a positive experience, he said, adding people recognize him from his "Mr. December" photo.

" I'm fine with it," he said. "I'm not regretting it. It would be different if it was full nudity.

" I wouldn't do that."

ShootPrep

After working with thousands of new models and college students, we know the concerns, issues and questions many new models have before their first photo shoot. It is normal for even the most macho guy to be nervous prior to his first shoot. We compiled all this training info into “ShootPrep” – our dedicated site for training models with whom we work.

Our photographer uses ShootPrep.com to train new models before their photo sessions.
