OHS Grad Featured in Campus Men Calendar

School's back in session around the Ohio State University campus. Along with Buckeye memorabilia and posters of favorite musical groups, one of the hot new items that's being tacked up on dormitory and apartment walls is the 2003 edition of the "Campus Men" calendar.

Male coeds have always had their pinup girls. The "Campus Men" calendar turns the tables and gives women on campus something to talk about the way guys discuss the annual "Sports Illustrated" swimsuit edition.

Amber Closton, an Ohio State sophomore who hails from Gahanna, said she has heard buzz about the locally produced calendar.

"I've heard about it, but I've never really seen it," she said.Closton added, however, that from what she's heard, "I'd buy it."

The calendar spotlights OSU students from central Ohio. The calendar, which is distributed nationwide, was photographed by Ohio State alumnus Sean Ashbrook and has collegiate and athletic themes, including shots of basketball, baseball and football players along with students in dorm rooms and other campus settings.

Powell resident Steve O'Rourke, 21, and 22-year-old Dennis Kaps of Worthington were among those selected from the 80 students who applied to be in the calendar. O'Rourke, who is "Mr. July," was "discovered" while standing in line at a grocery store last year by calendar producers who asked him to audition.

"It kind of surprised me, because that's usually the last thing you're thinking about when you're buying groceries," O'Rourke said. "It was something I had never done before. I thought I could get some experience and make some money at the same time."

O'Rourke, who graduated from Olentangy High School in 1998, is pictured on a lacrosse field in the calendar.

"One of the main premises of the calendar is to do a sports theme," he said. "I happen to play lacrosse, so it seemed like a natural thing to do."

O'Rourke said many of his friends and classmates have ordered the calendar.

"They all like it," he said. "My friends like to tease me about it. They're not used to seeing me in that situation."

O'Rourke said his parents, Michael and Saundra O'Rourke, have also been supportive.

"They definitely told me that school comes first," he said, "but doing things on the side to make money, they're all for it."

Kaps, who is "Mr. November" and "Mr. Spring Break," was selected to appear in the calendar when a fraternity brother submitted his photo to the producers. An athlete who played lacrosse and ice hockey at Thomas Worthington High School, Kaps is also the power lifting trainer for the Worthington Special Olympics team.

The "Campus Men" calendar has become a cottage industry for Ashbrook, who published his first calendar in the mid-'90s while he was a sophomore living in an OSU dorm. "The Lantern" dubbed the calendar "immensely popular" when it was first introduced, and has become a tradition on campus.

"It was something to test my business skills," said Ashbrook, who majored in marketing. "Necessity is the mother of invention. When we first started, we used photographers. As time went on, I began taking the pictures myself and I found I had a knack for it."

Ashbrook said he has developed a keen eye for identifying photogenic, personable models.

"We run a tough program. After so many years, you can spot who has the personality and the looks," he said. "You can't just base it on looks."

Ashbrook said past editions of the calendar have led to other modeling and acting offers for the students. Both O'Rourke and Kaps say they have gotten a boost from their new "hunk" status and would like to do more modeling.

O'Rourke, a senior majoring in psychology, said he plans to go on to graduate school and become a clinical psychologist, but would welcome any show-business opportunities that came his way.

"Now that I've had some training, it appeals to me even more," he said. "It was a lot more fun than I expected it to be."

Copies of the $14.95 calendar can be ordered by visiting CampusMen.com or writing Calendar Models, P.O. Box 3301, Columbus, Ohio 43210.
