OSU men featured on 1987 calendar

Note: This news story relates to a male calendar not published by the current publishers of "Campus Men." This news story is offered for its historical value.

Calendar girls have come and gone, and-the time has come for the men of Ohio State University.

Three OSU students are marketing a 1987 color calendar picturing 12 male students.

The three entrepreneurs are Scott Jordan of Cincinnati, Tony Campagni of Worthington and Ed Allen of Dayton. In the business world, they are the Images Calendar Line.

Campagni got the idea for the calendar while visiting the University of Southern California, where he saw a calendar featuring USC men.

"Looking at the size of Ohio State, we thought it would be Successful here," Jordan said.

"We've really learned a lot by setting up our own business, Allen said. Jordan said, "It's a lot more work than I expected."

They also learned their project is not the first OSU, males calendar. A calendar was published in the early '80's and it made money. They found that encouraging.

The 12 models for the new calendar were selected from 200 people who responded to ads in the student newspaper, The Lantern. Sixty of those were invited to interviews, then 12 were chosen.

Model Ralph Amos said being chosen was a real ego boost. "I'm very flattered. I've never done anything like this before."

Appearance was not the only criterion. Jordan said. "We also considered their personalities and achievements. We want to show Ohio-State in a- good way."

Along with the photographs, the calendars will have a short sketch of each model. In a business class, Allen and Jordan ran a feasibility study on the project. The idea of creating a calendar with males rather than females came out of the marketing research.

"We learned that women bought more calendars than men," Allen said. "So, to minimize the risk, we decided to design a calendar for them."

The first printing will be 5,000 copies. The creators hope to sell 15,000 or more. Plans for an all female calendar are in the making.

"We'd like to get established and, hopefully, expand next year," Jordan said.

The calendar will probably sell for $6 to $8.

The three men, all 21, have nearly $15,000 invested. The money came from loans cosigned by their parents. Part of the production cost will be absorbed by revenue from calendar ads.

Plans call for selling the calendar in a number of campus-area stores, at OSU branch campuses and at the University of Dayton and Bowling Green State University.

The calendar does hot have a formal title, pending a meeting with OSU officials on a request for permission to use the university's name.

ShootPrep

After working with thousands of new models and college students, we know the concerns, issues and questions many new models have before their first photo shoot. It is normal for even the most macho guy to be nervous prior to his first shoot. We compiled all this training info into “ShootPrep” – our dedicated site for training models with whom we work.

Our photographer uses ShootPrep.com to train new models before their photo sessions.
