Half-naked men not on shelves at Long's
Those interested in picking up the annual "Campus Men" calendar will not be able to do so at Long's Bookstore this year.
The calendar, which features 16 Ohio State students, has been sold at Long Bookstore since 1982, though sometimes carrying different names. In 1983 a calendar was called "The Dogs of OSU".
However, with the recent purchase of Long's by Campus Partners and its leasing to Barnes and Noble, the calendar is not authorized to be sold, said Bill Butts, supply manager at Long's.
Butts said the decision not to sell the calendar this year has nothing to do with the models being scantliy clad.
"Long's is no longer an independent privately owned company, and we are only allowed to sell through approved vendors, period," Butts said.
Sean Ashbrook, the calendar photographer and publisher, said Long had been the only campus bookstore he had worked with since he began publishing the calendar in 1988.
"Long's has been an excellent store throughout the years, that's why I am disappointed not to be carried by them this year" Ashbrook said. "I want students to be able to obtain it easily; it was a big seller."
The calendar is only sold on its Web site and by the models.
Chad Beldon, a senior in marketing and a model featured in the calendar, said reaction to the calendar has been nothing but positive from the student body.
"The females love it" Beldon said. "I sold 100 before the calendar even came out and had numerous requests for more. I even had one girl buy six."
Beldon said the calendar gives future opportunities to the models interested in further pursuing a career in modeling or television. Four models have appeared on "The Jenny Jones Show," and Beldon said he has had offers with companies such as Abercrombie and Fitch.
